Most people assume that tarot card reading is a mystical gift; that the bearers of the cards hold amazing talent and skill, but this idea is only a romanticized exaggeration of the real thing. Tarot cards are actually used as aids to heighten the readers state of mind and spirituality, and can in fact be read by anyone as long as they can follow simple instructions. Guides on reading can be found in bookstores and even for free on the internet, and decks varying in all sorts of artistic designs can be purchased from many different retailers, online or from physical stores. There are also people who create their own tarot decks.

When it comes to playing the cards, there are two different reading activities to choose from. First is the question reading. In question readings, the tarot readers use the cards to answer a specific question. Because tarot cards work as a guide, yes and no questions are prohibited. This is due to the fact that the cards are supposed to function as a thoughtful experience, rather than a direct decision maker. Remember, the cards are trying to enlighten your mind!

Questions must not be too broad or too detailed. For example, instead of asking how your crush feels about you, ask about where you personally stand in relation to him as a person. Also remember to always keep a neutral point of view toward your question; if you approach the question with a negative outlook, then you are not allowing the cards to help you, and thus your answer will stay negative no matter what.

The second activity is the “open reading”. Open readings slightly resemble question readings; however, they differ in focus. For example, instead of asking a specific question, the reader is just attempting to better understand certain aspects of life, such as romance, health, or finances. If you are interested in exploring your spiritual enlightenment we recommend a book by Eckhart Tolle called the power of now.

Remember, as long as you understand the function of tarot cards, you’ll without a doubt have a fun spiritual experience using them!
